Milbank LLP was shortlisted for two 2024 LawWorks Pro Bono Awards. The honors are bestowed annually by LawWorks, a London-based charity working in England and Wales to connect volunteer lawyers with people in need of legal advice who are not eligible for legal aid and cannot afford to pay.
Milbank was nominated in the Best Contribution by a Large Firm category for its work in defending repossession proceedings brought against a Royal Air Force veteran who was the victim of an investment fraud scheme. He lost his entire life savings and was manipulated into selling his home to a quick-sale property company. The Milbank London team, led by partner Tom Canning and associates Michael Bingham, Conrad Marinkovic and Ilka Reglitz, ultimately helped him win his house back in court. The story was reported by the BBC, helping raise awareness of fraud that specifically targets pensioners.
In addition, Lauren Beattie, an associate in Milbank’s London office, was shortlisted for Best Contribution by a Junior Lawyer. “Lauren’s pro bono work, from helping prisoners in the United States to assisting a women’s charity in a small Essex village, has undoubtedly had a profound impact on the lives it has touched. It is the rare combination of vision, dedication and technical ability that distinguishes Lauren as an outstanding pro bono lawyer,” said Anthony Cassino, Milbank’s pro bono counsel.
Pro bono participation in Milbank’s London office has expanded significantly in recent years, with lawyers averaging 33 hours of pro bono a year. Earlier this year, the firm was named the 2024 International Law Firm of the Year by TrustLaw for its outstanding pro bono work.
