LaMano: Latinx Attorney Mentoring & Networking Organization

LaMano, meaning “the hand” in Spanish, is a Milbank affinity group formed in 2006, with the goal of supporting the recruitment, retention and professional development of Latinx attorneys at the Firm.

2021 Virtual Summer Program Highlights

  • Con Orgullo: Milbank was honored to host Con Orgullo (With Pride), a virtual firmwide event featuring guest speaker Hon. Maite D. Oronoz-Rodríguez, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico and the first openly LGBTQ+ female Chief Justice in US history. The event was sponsored by Milbank’s LaMano and Pride affinity groups.

  • Leadership Forum: Associate and summer associate LaMano members were invited to a virtual informal forum where they were able to meet and speak in small-group breakout rooms with Milbank partners, including Carlos Albarracín, Roland Estevez, Grant Mainland, Atara Miller and Iliana Ongun.

  • Empanda Workshop: Associate and summer associate members were invited to a virtual empanada-making class with Steph Gallardo of Love, Nelly, a Latina-owned bakery based in Brooklyn, New York.

Milbank Celebrates Hispanic and Latinx Heritage

September 15 to October 15 marks Latinx Heritage Month in the US, a time in which we recognize the diversity and history of Hispanic and Latinx communities. Concluding their celebrations for Latinx Heritage Month in 2021, LaMano hosted an autumn dinner al fresco, while also welcoming some of Milbank's new first-year associates.

Mujeres at Milbank

Our LaMano and W@M affinity groups hosted Mujeres at Milbank, a discussion moderated by Litigation associate Griselda Cabrera with some of the Firm’s Latina partners – Nelly Almeida, Iliana Ongun, Fabiana Sakai and Carolina Walther-Meade – about their career paths, accomplishments, and the unique challenges they faced along the way.

Supporting the Latinx Community

Milbank has a longstanding relationship with LatinoJustice, working with the organization for more than 20 years on its immigration advocacy efforts and other issues affecting the Latinx community. In 2021, LatinoJustice recognized the Firm’s efforts with a Pro Bono Publico Award.
