Milbank LLP associate Hui Ling Teo participated in a panel discussion titled “A Roadmap for Sustainability” at the MRO Asia-Pacific 2022 Conference, held in Singapore on September 20 – 22.
Ms. Teo, a member of Milbank’s Transportation and Space Group in Singapore, discussed how aviation companies have recognized that sustainability and decarbonization are increasingly pressing imperatives and necessary to the future of their businesses.
“Manufacturers, MROs and airlines throughout the aviation industry’s value chain are finding innovative approaches to make their operations greener,” Ms. Teo said. “Equally, in the finance world we are seeing more activity in sustainability-linked financing and green financing. Many banks and financial institutions, including those headquartered in the APAC region, have sustainability targets and deadlines in place and are keen to support their clients in transitioning into cleaner operations.” She also addressed regulatory structures and regulatory enablement, such as national carbon taxes, as well as the role of global entities like the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) that serve as international forums.
“The key and continuing theme,” said Ms. Teo, ”is that by making financing either more available or cheaper for green purposes or greener modes of operation, the finance industry is ready to act as a catalyst in the green transition.”
