Milbank LLP was awarded the Project Finance Deal of the Year at the 2023 Asian Legal Business Southeast Asia Law Awards for its work on the AMIN Copper Smelter Project in Indonesia.
Milbank represented the borrower, PT Amman Mineral Industri (AMIN), and sponsors in connection with the development of a 900,000 tonnes per annum copper concentrate smelter and refinery at the Batu Hijau mine. The Milbank team acted on all aspects of the US$1.5 billion project development, including the construction contracts, the operating agreements and the limited recourse financing. It is one of the first large-scale copper smelter projects to be constructed pursuant to the Indonesian government’s mining law requiring Indonesian metal miners to build smelters in connection with their export license as part of the government’s wider attempts to develop a downstream metals industry.
“We are honored to be recognized as a leading legal project finance team,” said Singapore-based Global Projects Energy and Infrastructure Finance Group partner James Orme, who led the Milbank effort. “It is a privilege to work with innovative clients and investors in the infrastructure sector across Asia.”
“Milbank is delighted to be part of this winning transaction and are extremely grateful for the confidence that AMIN has placed in us. We have an outstanding team in Asia and the award is a testimony to our capabilities as well as the depth of our practice,” said David Zemans, Managing Partner of Milbank’s Asia Practice and Singapore office
Earlier this month Milbank was named Indonesia International Law Firm of the Year for the fifth time at the 2023 Chambers Asia Pacific and Greater China Region Awards.
