Mariella Montplaisir Bazan is an associate in the New York office of Milbank LLP and a member of the firm’s Litigation & Arbitration Group.

Primary Focus & Experience
Mariella’s versatile work includes representing clients in cross-border litigation and enforcement investigations as well as advising on complex international transactions with multiple merger clearance requirements.
Prior to joining Milbank, Mariella served as counsel to the Government of Canada in multiple investor-state arbitrations in which she successfully litigated claims involving over US$2.2 billion. She also represented Canada in several WTO proceedings, as well as in treaty negotiations in Spanish, French, and English.
Mariella clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada for Justices Thomas A. Cromwell and Malcolm H. Rowe. She also clerked for Justice Claude Champagne of the Quebec Superior Court and Judge Gerald Lebovits at the New York City Civil Court.
She previously worked with a defense team at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Tanzania and with the Principal Legal Officer at the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law in Italy.
For almost a decade, Mariella taught public international law and conflict of laws at the University of Ottawa in Canada.
Mariella is a native French and Spanish speaker.
