Milbank LLP International Arbitration partner Viren Mascarenhas will speak at the University of Pennsylvania's 7th Annual International Arbitration Conference on March 21, 2025. The conference will address arbitration and courts in the face of change.
Mr. Mascarenhas will speak on the "Investment Arbitration's Response to the Climate Change Crisis" panel. Panelists will discuss the role of investment treaties in promoting global climate goals and how investment arbitration could become a tool for sustainable energy transition. They will also examine ongoing proposals to reform investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS), such as climate carve-outs in treaties and embedding climate science into arbitration decisions.
Mr. Mascarenhas is joined on the panel by Lisa Sachs, Director of the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment, Alexandre de Gramont, Head of International Dispute at Womble Bond Dickinson, Anneliese Fleckenstein, Senior Legal Counsel at the ICSID, and Diem Huong Ho, Senior Associate at Foley Hoag.
