Milbank LLP Financial Restructuring partner Nelly Almeida participated in a New York City Bar Association panel discussion titled “The What, Why and How of Sponsorship and Mentorship” on June 28. The virtual event was part of the New York City Bar’s Leadership Institute (ALI) LITE program.
Ms. Almeida and her fellow panelists addressed the importance of sponsorship and mentorship relationships in the continuing professional development of junior attorneys. The discussion topics included:
- The difference between sponsorship and mentorship
- Developing the right sponsorship and mentorship relationships
- How sponsorship and mentorship relationships change over time
- Being an excellent sponsee/mentee
- Common challenges in sponsorship and mentorship relationships – and potential solutions
Ms. Almeida has extensive experience leading complex corporate and US restructuring matters, representing debtors, creditors, lenders, official committees, equity holders, and other interested parties at various stages of a deal. Notable examples of her work include the cases of Nordic Aviation Capital (Ireland-based leasing company), Seadrill Limited (off-shore drilling servicer), Cinepolis (Mexico’s largest movie theatre operator), Cirque du Soleil (Canadian live-entertainment company), and the ongoing restructuring in Puerto Rico.
The New York City Bar’s Associate Leadership Institute (ALI) LITE, established by the organization’s Office for Diversity and Inclusion, is a professional development program for junior associates (1-3 years) that focuses on developing skills imperative to career progression, such as business development, leadership and management skills.
