The Cyrus R. Vance Center (“the Center”), an organization that provides legal representation to civil society institutions and international human rights bodies globally, recognized Milbank LLP for its work on a Good Governance pro bono project as part of its Celebration of International Pro Bono Excellence. The celebration commemorated the work of law firms who, in partnership with the Center, provided advice and representation in 93 matters for 64 social justice organizations worldwide.
Milbank worked with the Fundación para el Desarrollo de la Libertad Ciudadana, the Panamanian national chapter of Transparency International, on an international comparative analysis of ultimate beneficial ownership registries. These registries contribute to corporate transparency and reduce incidences of corruption, money laundering, tax avoidance and evasion by naming the ultimate person or entity that benefits when certain acts or transactions are initiated. The analysis promotes economic justice while seeking to combat unjust global wealth distribution and unequal economic growth.
The Milbank team was led by Corporate partner Arndt Stengel, and included Capital Markets associates Marcela Barba and Jesus Narvaez, Structured Finance associates Angela Chen and Andrew Park, Corporate associate Sebastian Dexheimer, and Project, Energy and Infrastructure Finance associate Séverine Losembe. The team collaborated with Jaime Chavez Alor, the Latin America Policy Director at the Center, and Olga de Obaldía, the Executive Director of Fundación para el Desarrollo de la Libertad Ciudadana.
