Milbank LLP Antitrust partner Fiona Schaeffer, Chair of the ABA Antitrust Law Section (2023-24), will open the ABA Antitrust Law Section’s inaugural Antitrust Across Africa conference in Cape Town, South Africa, on Friday, September 20, 2024. This landmark event will bring together government enforcers, judges, academics, practitioners and economists to explore cutting-edge issues in competition and consumer protection across Africa and around the globe.
Last month, Ms. Schaeffer also led the American Bar Association (ABA) Antitrust Law Section’s Global Seminar Series (GSS), held in Sydney, Australia, on August 21.Ms. Schaeffer gave opening and closing remarks at the conference and moderated a panel on the practical implications of the proposed new merger control regime in Australia. The event brought together antitrust enforcers, judges and practitioners from the US and Australia to discuss emerging antitrust issues in the region, including the most significant reforms to the Australian merger review regime in the country’s history. The ABA Antitrust Law Section also is submitting detailed comments on the proposed reforms to the Australian merger regime.
As one of the leading antitrust lawyers in the US and internationally, Ms. Schaeffer’s practice spans all aspects of antitrust law, including mergers and joint ventures, government investigations and antitrust counseling. Ms. Schaeffer also has expertise in emerging issues in antitrust, including the implications of using AI models and the antitrust implications of ESG initiatives, including competitor collaborations intended to promote sustainability. She has also worked with clients to develop and implement strategies to mitigate risks while achieving their business objectives.
The ABA Antitrust Law Section is the leading professional organization for antitrust and competition and consumer protection law globally. Prior to serving as Chair of the ABA Antitrust Law Section, Ms. Schaeffer held many other leadership roles within the ABA, including International Officer and Diversity Officer. She also previously served as Chair of the Antitrust & Trade Regulation Committee of the New York City Bar Association and is a member of the Executive Committee of the New York State Bar Association Antitrust Section.
