Milbank LLP Global Project, Energy and Infrastructure Finance partner Allan Marks spoke on the panel “The State of Decarbonization in LA” at the inaugural Los Angeles Climate Week on September 8-15, 2024. The weeklong event brought climate organizations, policymakers, innovators, companies, and the LA community together to exchange ideas and discuss local climate solutions.
Mr. Marks was featured on the program coordinated by SidePorch. The panel, moderated by Nishant Mani of Terra.do and Climate Capital, spotlighted decarbonization trends and initiatives across the energy, transportation, industrial processes and ports sectors. Mr. Marks, alongside co-panelists Brian Wayne of CurvePoint Capital and Jose Urizar of DTE Materials, also discussed how technology companies drive both economic and climate resilience.
Mr. Marks noted that Los Angeles has cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30% since 1990 and reduced per capita energy usage even while increasing economic output. Nonetheless, the city still generates over 25 million metrics tons of carbon dioxide equivalents a year. Most of the GHG reductions so far have come from decarbonizing electricity supplies and significant transportation improvements, including the shift to EVs and expanded transit networks. The easiest reductions in greenhouse gas emissions have already been achieved, and emissions from industry, municipal solid waste and buildings continue to rise, requiring new solutions.
