Primary Focus & Experience
Ms. Dakin-Grimm currently represents performing rights organization BMI in disputes over use of copyrighted music. In September, 2014, Ms. Dakin-Grimm won a jury trial in Los Angeles Superior Court on behalf of BMI, concerning efforts of third parties to take for themselves the performance royalties earned by songwriter Sly Stone, of Sly & the Family Stone. In 2010, Ms. Dakin-Grimm won in trial, on behalf of a group of secured lenders, a hotly contested “cram-up” fight in the US Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York, defeating both the Debtor and the Creditors’ Committee’s efforts to reinstate secured debt of Young Broadcasting. The court’s lengthy decision was reported at 430 B.R. 99 (Bankr. SDNY 2010). In 2007, she won a five-week jury trial in the US District Court for the Central District of California, concerning the breach of a stock purchase agreement. In 2006, Ms. Dakin-Grimm prevailed in a two-month trial in the US Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, on behalf of a consortium of banks who disputed the enterprise value of a Debtor. That case was reported at 356 B.R. 364 (Bankr. D. Del 2006). Ms. Dakin-Grimm represented eight US insurers and their European parents in a well-publicized dispute with the California Department of Insurance, over the Department’s purported regulation of European life insurers. The US Supreme Court ruled in favor of Ms. Dakin-Grimm’s clients. Ms. Dakin-Grimm repeatedly has won significant financial victories for property/casualty insurers and reinsurers in confidential arbitration disputes.

Ms. Dakin-Grimm has consistently been ranked as a leading lawyer by Chambers USA (Band 1), Benchmark Litigation (Top 250 Women in Litigation, 2012-2015), The International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers and The Best Lawyers in America. She has also been recognized as one of California’s “Top Women Attorneys” by the Daily Journal. Ms. Dakin-Grimm is a frequent speaker. She has co-chaired and spoken repeatedly at ARIAS annual meetings and other industry conferences.
